I often need to reconnect with my feminine sensuality to delight in being alive. This helps me find more enjoyable ways to inspire, inform, and empower the members of my Dance Enrichment and Wellness Program (DEW), so we can live happier, healthier, and more fulfilling lives.
For this month's update in our Dance Enrichment & Wellness Program, I’ve developed an entire course on structured improvisation based on my dance, Bolero de la Luna Llena. I have been performing and teaching this sensual dance of fulfillment—both in choreography and improvisation—since 1992, when I first encountered the music called "The Sensual Chifti" by Eddie Kochak. I am continually amazed at how it feels fresh and renewing every time I dance it!
Over the years, I have observed in myself and my students how slow, sensual motions help us appreciate our bodies in new ways, fostering greater confidence and self-esteem. I’ve seen how this heightened body awareness can also improve our posture and movement quality in our everyday lives.
I am deeply grateful to Eddie for the incredible musical legacy he left us. I had the delight and honor of performing with him in New York City. Eddie Kochak was not only a generous friend who always supported my dancing but also a remarkable musician who made authentic Middle Eastern music accessible to Western audiences.
I’ve always been especially enamored with his chiftetellis and bolero/rumbas. Whenever the weight of masculine burdens like focus, hard work, and achievements becomes too heavy for me, Eddie’s sensual bolero music serves me as my refuge and sanctuary. This music inspires me to dance, relax, and reconnect with my feminine sensuality and joy for life.
2024 marks the 10th anniversary of Eddie Kochak's passing. In gratitude, I am producing a series of videos to honor and remember him and his music. In the video above, I am dancing in nature to Eddie’s piece "Dance Phaedra Pharaonica." I am improvising and dancing with abandon, my bare feet feeling the earth, the warm breezes caressing my face, and the frame drum evoking the full moon—symbolizing the fulfillment of potential, contentment, and satisfaction.
